PokerStars has no rakeback system. Instead, it has a VIP system that is equivalent to rakeback on other sites which reward the true grinders. When you play in real money games (cash games, SnG’s, MTTS) on PokerStars, you earn VPPs based on the amount of rake you have paid. At the same time, you also earn FPPs based on your VIP Level. These FPPs can be exchanged for items, tournament buy-ins and instant cash bonuses in the store.
Players can also take advantage of the freerolls that run on a weekly and monthly basis. The higher your VIP level, the bigger prizepools your freerolls will have.
PokerStars has six different VIP levels, earned through monthly or yearly VIP Player Points. The first four, BronzeStar, SilverStar, GoldStar and PlatinumStar are monthly VIP levels. Each level brings its own unique set of rewards and benefits. Supernova and Supernova Elite are the highest levels of the VIP Club and are achieved on a yearly basis.

The percentages in brackets are the approximate rakeback that you will get at each VIP level. The Monthly VIP levels are recommended for lower stakes players and also full-time MTT players. The amount of $ that you get back per FPPs depends on what you buy in the store. Usually online tournament tickets have the best ‘exchange rate’ and would provide the best rakeback. We recommend that you wait until you are on PlatinumStar to use your FPPs so that you get more favorable rates.

Again, the percentages in brackets are the approximate rakeback that you will get at each VIP level. A low stakes and mid stakes cash game grinder can easily achieve Supernova in a year. But we only recommend players who are bankrolled for $0.25/$0.50 level to attempt for Supernova.

2012 PokerStars Rake System Change
For the start of 2012, PokerStars have changed from the dealt method of calculating rake/FPPs to the contributed method. Now, the amount of FPPS a player earns depends on how much they contribute to the pot.
On March 1, PokerStars changed their VIP terms, making it easier to reach and maintain VIP Levels. The requirements for the SilverStar, GoldStar and PlatinumStar levels have been lowered but the same great bonuses remain unchanged. PokerStars have also made it easier for players to maintain their Supernova status.
